Background of the Study

The logistics industry has undergone significant transformation with the advent of smart technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and automation systems (Gore et al., 2024). These technologies enable more efficient management of logistics operations, reducing human error, improving supply chain visibility, and optimizing resource use. Nigerian Breweries, as one of Nigeria's largest manufacturers of beverages, operates a complex logistics network that spans procurement, warehousing, distribution, and retail delivery. The adoption of smart technology in logistics operations has the potential to streamline these processes, enhancing speed, accuracy, and overall efficiency.

In Sokoto State, where Nigerian Breweries operates a significant portion of its distribution and logistics activities, the integration of smart technologies into logistics operations could significantly improve the flow of goods and materials, reduce operating costs, and ensure better service delivery to customers. Smart technologies such as real-time tracking systems, automated inventory management, and AI-powered route optimization can provide key insights into logistical inefficiencies, allowing for quick corrections that ensure optimal performance (Wang et al., 2023).

The study aims to evaluate how Nigerian Breweries has implemented smart technologies in its logistics operations in Sokoto State and assess the impact of these technologies on the overall efficiency of its supply chain and distribution network.

Statement of the Problem

Although the potential benefits of smart technology adoption in logistics are widely recognized, the extent to which these technologies have been successfully implemented at Nigerian Breweries in Sokoto State remains unclear. Without effective deployment, the promise of smart technologies may not be fully realized, leading to persistent inefficiencies in logistics operations, such as delays in product delivery, stockouts, and increased costs (Sivakumar et al., 2024). Therefore, understanding the factors that hinder or support the successful adoption of these technologies is critical for Nigerian Breweries to optimize its logistics operations and achieve competitive advantage.

This research seeks to fill this gap by assessing the current state of smart technology adoption in Nigerian Breweries’ logistics operations in Sokoto State and its overall impact on operational efficiency.

Objectives of the Study

1. To appraise the adoption of smart technologies in logistics operations at Nigerian Breweries, Sokoto State.

2. To evaluate the impact of smart technology adoption on operational efficiency in logistics at Nigerian Breweries.

3. To provide recommendations for further optimizing logistics operations through the integration of smart technologies at Nigerian Breweries.

Research Questions

1. What smart technologies have been adopted in logistics operations at Nigerian Breweries, Sokoto State?

2. How do these smart technologies impact the operational efficiency of logistics operations at Nigerian Breweries?

3. What strategies can be implemented to enhance the adoption of smart technologies in logistics operations at Nigerian Breweries?

Research Hypotheses

1. Smart technology adoption does not significantly improve operational efficiency in logistics operations at Nigerian Breweries, Sokoto State.

2. The use of smart technologies in logistics operations has no significant impact on cost reduction at Nigerian Breweries.

3. The adoption of smart technologies has no significant effect on customer satisfaction with logistics services at Nigerian Breweries.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on the adoption and impact of smart technologies in Nigerian Breweries’ logistics operations in Sokoto State. Data will be collected through interviews with logistics managers, observations, and analysis of performance metrics. However, the research may be limited by the proprietary nature of some logistics technologies and the availability of up-to-date operational data.

Definitions of Terms
